Summary

Britain’s woeful electoral system wastes millions of votes and consistently enables minority rule. KLINA JORDAN, joint CEO of the ‘Make Votes Matter’ campaign, tells Naomi Smith why Labour should make implementing proportional representation their first priority in Government, and offers some key rebuttals to common PR myths. “People have been campaigning on this issue for 130 years” “Labour have only gotten into power when there was electoral coordination going on” “There’s no reason why coalition deals should be done in smoked-filled rooms” Presented by Naomi Smith. Produced by Andrew Harrison. Assistant producer Jacob Archbold. Music by Kenny Dickinson. Audio production by Alex Rees. In 2019, with 43% of the vote, the Conservatives got an 80 seat landslide majority.

And so I hear you ask what is the point of an election if the system means that for many voters there is no

1:45.4

meaningful way for them to express their real preferences. If election outcomes

1:49.8

don't reflect what voters think is it any wonder that more and more people feel disenfranchised

1:54.7

and ask themselves why bother voting at all when their vote is essentially wasted.

According to the Electoral Reform Society, 45% of votes in 2019 were wasted because they were given to a
