Summary

Yes, of course we are still talking about Ohio State's season-opening win over Texas four days later. Really, we are curious what it means for the No. 1 Buckeyes moving forward as they attempt to be the first team in program history to repeat as national champions.  We also know who won certain position battles in camp, such as at right tackle, running back and strong safety. Matt Baxendell and Dave Biddle tackle all of that and much more on the Wednesday 5ish. Welcome to the Bucknuts Morning 5 here on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2025.

I am Dave Biddle, very happy, joined by Matt Baxendell.

We're going to talk about the number one team in the nation, the defending national champions, a fresh off a win against Texas. We're going to give our main takeaways from the Texas game, really push it forward, though. Like, what does it really mean moving forward? First thing, Bax, good to see you. Welcome to the show. Thank you, Mr. Biddle. Excited to be here. talk about the number one Buckeyes once more. That's right. Number one. First time they've been number one in both polls, same time. I heard this morning since 2015. I was like, I thought in 2019 at some point they were, but whatever. It's good to be king. All right, let's start with, like, what we, the main takeaways.

1:13.1

Let's obviously start with Matt Patricia in this defense.

1:15.1

I love how creative he was, rolling different guys through and just, man, you can just

1:20.8

see how confused Arch was most of the time.

1:23.8

But just your thoughts on Matt, Matt Patricia, and Silver Bullets.

1:27.1

Well, I mean, from a starting perspective, this couldn't be any better, right?

1:31.4

It's a game that Texas had one score, the whole game, in the fourth quarter, and it was a

1:37.5

questionable review of whether or not the ball hit the ground. There's a very easy scenario to see

1:43.2

out. Matt Patricia deserves a ton of credit for

1:46.9

this. Arch Manning looked confused from the jump. I think also Archmanning looked nervous from the jump.

1:52.8

Let's be real honest here, if you ever saw the high school film he played against, it's not exactly

1:57.0

Caleb Downs and Arvel Reese and Sonny Stiles coming after him. So that's a factor too.

2:02.3

But what Matt Patricia did was very much high end in terms of disguising kind of how they were

2:10.9

covering every play. Like our secondary looked good and coached up and like they knew what they were doing,

2:15.8

but Texas had no idea what they were doing pre-snap. You know, it's amazing what happens when you play teams that don't know the play call. And Texas really struggled to even try to identify it on the field. So Matt Patricia, after one week, looks like an absolute grand slam of a higher. But, you know, it's only one week, and it's only one week in

2:34.9

August. So I think we have to make sure we're a little calmer about it than just assuming we're

2:39.4

automatically repeating, like some people are right now. Yeah, and like, I'm going to ask you

2:45.7

about some of the position battles that we now know, like, who won what, for example, Jalen McLean later.
