Summary

On this week’s show, Will and Mike begin by discussing the mail bombs sent by Cesar Sayoc to Trump political enemies. Mike points out that these events are symptomatic of the current political environment in which politics is a blood sport. Will agrees with concerns about how political rhetoric can be taken to extremes but does not believe Trump will see himself as at fault—nor should he. Both Mike and Will see merit in Trump’s assertion that the media has some role in the current environment. Looking at the immigration caravan from Honduras, Mike is disturbed by Trump’s characterization of the group as being full of criminals and terrorists. Will, on the other hand, is most worried by the idea of a collective group mounting what could be perceived as an invasion. Both Mike and Will find fault in policies and spending priorities related to immigration and note that this could impact the margins with certain midterm elections. Regarding Trump’s announcement that the U.S. would withdraw from the INF treaty, both Mike and Will believe that this is a valid decision given Russia’s blatant disregard for adhering to the standards held within. Mike is concerned with the potential spillover to the new START treaty, whereas Will believes this action should dispel some concerns over Trump’s alleged ties to Putin and Russia. Lastly, Will and Mike discuss the court ruling barring Georgia from throwing out absentee ballots for signatures not matching voter registration. While Mike believes that this will help to ensure a legitimate process, Will believes the stipulations set forth in the ruling will prove to be a difficult bureaucratic process for local officials and will introduce a new series of questions. I'm doing well, Mike. How are you doing?

Well, it's a big day for me because it is the birthday, as we record this, of my all-time favorite president, Theodore Roosevelt. I born this day in 1858. I always celebrate it.

0:30.6

That's awesome. Teddy Roosevelt's just an amazing president. It's funny, Mike. I'm'm at Disney World this weekend, and we were at America's

Adventure last night, and they have this great scene with Teddy Roosevelt and John Mayer talking

about the importance of the national park system and just this very non-political approach to

0:48.6

the discussion they're having. And it's obviously refreshing with what we have in Washington today.

0:52.5

Oh, God, God, yeah. And, you know, and of course,

TR's a Republican, but I really feel like in some ways he sort of embodies kind of the bipartisan sort

1:01.8

of spirit of what we try to do because, of course, he was a big trust buster type guy, and he went

away from party orthodoxy when he thought it was in the best

interest of the public and and he's i just always been just such a huge huge fan of his totally agree

1:23.4

about this week but you know i would have loved to have seen teddy's reaction to somebody sending him a mail bomber. I'm finding out that there's a group of people marching towards

his borders. When I picture Teddy, you know, eating the mail bomb or something and standing

1:35.4

at the border himself, it's just, you know, he has such a persona and such a strength about

1:39.9

his presidency. Yeah, yeah, the listeners, no, I still think that one story where he was

giving a speech at one point and somebody actually shot him and he just kept on and he finished

actually giving his speech after having been shot, which is, and if that isn't just sort of
