Imagine it's the 1950s for a moment.

What do you do when you're 14 years old and your mother says, hey, we know you're gay,

and you can either get married right now or be sent away to Utica.

That's where they would send queer people to quote-unquote cure them.

So what do you choose?

What she did was lie about her age using a forged baptismal certificate, then she took

the entrance exam for the U.S. Air Force, passed, and the very next day found herself in

Waco, Texas, where at 14 years old, she began

training for the Air Force.

She was free.

At least for a moment.

As you can guess, things didn't quite go as planned.

Like Magora, her mother was a very determined woman.

She soon tracked her down, took her back in New York State, and Magora did get married,

but she also proceeded to live a life that, on top of raising five children,

included being a part of the Black Panthers, being at Stonewall the night of the uprising,

and also eventually going back to school to become a reverend.

So the now 83-year-old Reverend Kennedy joins us on LGBTQNA today.
