Summary

The Magdalene Laundries, operatied under the guise of reforming "fallen" and "wayward" women and girls, only to exploit and abuse those that were working and residing in them. Their history should not be forgotten.

Hello, delicious friends and welcome to a very special episode of Who Did What Now, the History Podcast that is not your history class.

0:21.6

With me, your host, Katie Charlwood, History Harlet and Reader of Books.

0:29.0

So this is a re-release of an episode I did several, several years ago, on the Magdalene Laundries.

0:39.2

So bear with me for audio and other such concerns.

0:45.2

It was a few years ago, and I think I've got slightly better as time has gone on.

0:49.8

Now, the reason this is getting a re-release is because not only is it Women's History Month,

0:55.1

but it is also Irish Heritage Month. And I think it's a massive disservice to talk about

1:02.8

women's history and Irish heritage without bringing up the importance of the Magdalene Laundries

The second reason that this is being re-released is I'm going to have an episode coming out on Tuesday.

1:22.0

That is the regular release day and it's going to be on the Toom Babies.

Now I did warn all of you that things were going to get much worse this month, but I do have

1:31.2

a lovely palate cleanser. At the end, I've got something nice coming, don't you worry about it?

1:35.4

It's going to be very fun and lovely.

1:37.6

So I understand that this can be a very difficult topic for people to absorb and learn about

1:43.2

because it's just so horrible and harsh and

1:47.3

depraved, especially considering everything that's going on in the world at the minute. So I do

1:53.1

have some lovely fun, like fluffy content coming at the end of the month just to give you

1:58.4

all a break from the horrors, which persist.

2:02.6

But of course, so do I, and I will always be here to tell you the truth.

2:06.7

Now, if you have managed to live a life without knowing anything about this, well, buckle up.

2:15.0

And consider this your content warning, your trigger warning for this episode because I
