Summary

In this fragmented week for tennis - with WTA Madrid getting underway while ATP events take place in Estoril and Munich - we’ve split today’s podcast into two halves.

We begin by covering the incredible WTA draw in Madrid, Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal, the return to form for Kevin Anderson and Marin Cilic, and news that there will be play on Middle Sunday at Wimbledon from 2022 onwards.

Then, in part two, we tackle questions, guest edited by listener and Kickstarter backer Eli Kronenberg, on the biggest threats to tennis as we know it, what a World Cup of tennis could look like, whether the increasing longevity of players will be the new norm, TV camera angles, the potential for a grass court Masters 1000 event, players who would provide for a good coaching opportunity for Andy Murray, and the Grand Slam prospects of Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Aryna Sabalenka and Jen Brady.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced on Mondays and Thursdays, and daily during Grand Slam tournaments.

Hello folks and welcome along to our midweek tennis podcast just three days since we were

0:26.4

last with you. But an ATP and WTA 1000 event has kicked off in earnest since then this morning

0:33.6

the Mutua Madrid Open started as I look at my live scores app. Suddenly Alina Svitalina,

0:41.2

Kiki Burton's, Angelique Kerber and Marquette of Androshaver are playing tennis. It's sort of

0:48.1

relentless at the moment, isn't it David? It's not not a bad slate for a first day but an event

0:54.6

starting on a first day will never quite work for me. I don't think I just feel a bit weird about it

1:01.6

especially when there are two other events going on already that are well into the kind of

1:06.0

they're about to go into the quarterfinals aren't they tomorrow. And at the same time the women's

1:11.8

draw on imagery is so strong and so interesting. I'm also drawn to it. It just happens to be

1:19.1

I went around the courts a little bit and I saw a bit of Kerber and a bit of Svitalina and then I thought

1:23.1

oh I'll go and have a look at Ones Jibur and all I got was an orange tarp all in with rain splattering

1:30.0

it. And I could watch that live for as many hours as I like. So I decided to talk to you to instead.

1:37.9

I don't like it and it happens increasingly now with these sort of extended 1000 events. I

1:42.8

don't like it when the men's and the women's is sort of out of sync. I understand why that happens

1:49.6

and you know I am just thankful that the men's and women's events are happening concurrently.

1:56.0

I love a combined event but I wish it would just all be coordinated and kick off at the same time

2:01.9

with a big fanfare and a coordinated order of play. But alas it's this slightly sort of bitty start

2:09.7

not not helped by the rain sloshing down in Madrid. Matt how you doing?

2:16.8

I'm very well thank you. Yes and I agree with what you're saying. It sort of works these longer

2:23.3

events during Indian worlds in Miami when all the men and women are starting at the same time
