7 for 3,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stocks are too cheap, versus what they're worth?

That's my reaction to the furious bidding for US Steel with Nippon Steel, the fourth largest

steel maker in the world, bidding $55 per share for this stock that closed at $39 on Friday,

one that was a heck of a lot lower before it came out for auction.

To me that's the most salient story from today's relatively sedate action,

Dalvancing less than one point, but as in beginning 0.45%

NASDAQ rising 0.61%. The fact that Wall Street could be so wrong in its

judgment of a so-so-steel company has more to do with the market's obsession with the Federal Reserve

than with U.S. Steel itself.

Right now, after the Fed's tightening aggressively, companies like U.S. Steel are supposed to see their earnings collapse.

Historically that is what always happens.
