Summary

We continue our examination of Niccolo Machiavelli's "The Prince" as the political theorist discusses the negative impact that maintaining virtuous behavior can have on a ruler. This is where Machiavelli earns his reputation as a teacher of evil. We will also look at how war is the central duty around which the philosopher believes the office of prince revolves. 0:47.5

because, again, it's such a short read. Complex to be sure, something worth rereading multiple

0:52.9

times, but still something that pretty much

0:55.0

everyone can get under their belt so that's why i'm going through it together with you guys so we can

1:17.2

But of course, each one of these episodes is good in and of itself, has self-contained lessons we can learn.

1:22.4

So you don't have to watch them all if you don't want to.

1:25.5

That said, we are picking up with Machiavelli discussing

1:29.1

different forms of armies. He just got done talking about mercenaries and the danger of

1:34.7

mercenaries. This is a key part in Machiavelli, talking about the need to win under your own

1:39.9

sword. And that won't be going away in this section. We're going to see multiple times how critical
