Tim Cook did something on Thursday that a lot of people thought he had already done.

He came out as a homosexual.

One would be forgiven for thinking he'd already done that.

Out magazine made Cook Number One in its 2013 LGBT power list.

The magazine says the yearly list ranks the gay men and women whose power and prestige

is instrumental in influencing the way Americans think

about and engage with the world. Never mind the fact that Cook had never commented

publicly on his sexual orientation. In June of this year, Forbes says one of the hosts of CNBC's squawk on the street

appeared to Outcook.

Co-anchor Simon Hobbs said on air, I think Tim Cook is fairly open about the fact that he's gay at the head of Apple, isn't he?

He was not, at least not publicly.

With Apple's first corporate participation in pride this year in

San Francisco and with comments the CEO made earlier this week when being

inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor, Alabama being Cook's home state. If you thought Tim Cook was gay,

you might have felt safer this year thinking so, but he'd never said so publicly.

Until Thursday. never said so publicly until Thursday in an open letter published in

business week coke wrote about cherishing his privacy at the same time he's

willing to give up a bit of that for what he sees as a greater good.
