In terms of importance to Apple today,

this first story should be the last story,

or near the end anyway. But it has to be the first story. There are no more dumb

iPods. Apple has killed the last two, the Nanow and the shuffle

Bloomberg sees yesterday's news as the iPod taking a big step toward eventual oblivion but I'd argue that yesterday was that step step. The last one. The iPod is dead. Yes, you can still get an

iPod touch, but that is not an iPod. It's an iPhone without the phone. You want the simplicity of a single purpose device,

something that can play music and can't play games or access Facebook?

You need to take care of the dumb iPod you have.

Bloomberg had Apple saying in a statement, today we are simplifying our iPod lineup

with two models of iPod touch, now with double the capacity starting at just

$199 and we're discontinuing the iPod shuffle and iPod Nano. This really does make sense. It has for years. I wrote a piece back in 2006 saying that the

iPod would go away one day in favor of some sort of converged device. I figured Apple would make the

thing that would kill the iPod, but either way I knew that something would. Plus

what's the return for Apple to keep selling a thing that can't subscribe to its $10 a month

music streaming service and can't download apps?
