Tuesday I brought you news of a Wall Street Journal story that said Apple looked

to be on the verge of buying Intel's cellular modem business a move seen by

many as Apple's attempt to design 5G cellular modems of its own.

At the time, the journal said the iPhone maker was in advanced talks to pick up Intel patents and

staff for $1 billion or more. Secret sources

seem split on whether it would happen so I said we'd check back in if the

deal went through.

Apple issued a press release on Thursday saying Intel and Apple have signed an agreement for Apple to pick up most of Intel's smartphone modem business

That'll see close to 2,200 Intel employees joining Apple bringing with them intellectual property, equipment, and leases.

Valued at $1 billion, the deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2019, subject to regulatory approval.
