Apple may be looking to give Gazelle and its ilk a run for their money.

Bloomberg has secret sources saying that the iPhone maker plans to launch an iPhone

trade-end program in its stores this month.

The piece says the move is aimed at getting users to upgrade to the iPhone 5 and turn in older

models.

The way you'd want to do that just three or four months ahead of the anticipated release of the next iPhone is

beyond me. Apple's got reasons for pursuing such moves now though. First it would

help them boost sales that are likely to slow ahead of the next iPhones launch.

Additionally, it would give Apple a low-cost iPhone to sell in developing markets

without Apple having to build low-cost iPhones to sell in developing markets.

According to the piece, used iPhones collected in the US will only be resold in emerging markets

where Apple's share is lower and demand for cheap devices is greater said one of the people with whom Bloomberg spoke

That way the resale of Apple's older models won't cannibalize iPhone 5 sales in the US, the person said.
