iPhone still reigns supreme in the states.

I-more has word of new numbers from Comscore

that show Apple's answer to telephony as the far and away leader in smartphones in the US.

According to the report, iPhone share of the US smartphone market was 42.6% of the end of March. That was up from the 41.6% share it commanded at the end of the

December quarter. Samsung was everyone but Apple's share? It was. LG came in third for the March quarter with an 8.4%

share up slightly from December's 8%. Motorola was fourth with a 5% share, down a smidge from December's 5.2%.

And HTC rounded out the top 5 with a 3.8% share that was up about as little as it could be from the December quarters 3.7%.

The truly tantalizing Comscore numbers deal with the market share for mobile operating systems. That's tend to lies in the dictionary

definition. Torment or tease someone with the site or promise of something that is unobtainable.

iPhone's 42.6% smartphone share gives it a 42.6% share of the mobile OS market as well.

That would seem to put it within striking distance of Android's 52.4%. But it's not.

While Apple holding such a strong second against Android is amazing, it's practically unfathomable

that could ever take first at this point.

Because again, Apple is the one company making phones that run on iOS, while scads of companies,

including second place Samsung, third place LG, fourth place Motorola, and fifth place
