Apple's getting closer to more affordable iPhones in India. Mac Rumors says Wistran,

Apple's main iPhone maker on the subcontinent has won the first of two approvals needed

for a new smartphone factory there.

Citing a report from the Economic Times, Mac Rumor says India's IT ministry has given its go-ahead for the new facility.

Approval is still needed from the Indian Cabinet according to the piece.

Assuming that happens the way will be paved for iPhone 8 models without high import prices.

Moving up the iPhone chain, Mac rumor says similar approvals are in the works for FoxCon. Assuming it gets approval, it should be able to produce

iPhone 10S and iPhone 10S Max in India. One assumes it will also be able to produce the next high-end iPhones and the ones after those and the ones after those and so on.

India is the world's second largest smartphone market according to Mac rumors and the potential for growth is

gargantuan. Only one in four residents in India owns a smartphone leaving an

addressable market in the millions.

Of course they'd be easier to address if Apple can lower the price of iPhone, which necessitates

local manufacturing.

Quoting the report, Apple has been pushing to set up an iPhone manufacturing hub in India.
