What's an Iwatch worth to Apple?

As much as 17.5 billion dollars in the first year,

according to Morgan Stanley analyst Katie

Huberty not bad for a device that doesn't even exist yet. Barons had Katie

Kat issuing a note to investors on Tuesday saying Apple's spending on research and development is no joke.

She said increased periods of R&D spending like the increases seen by Apple over the last three years have historically led to improved stock performance and

the company seems to be setting up for something big in terms of impact.

Quoting her note, Apple kept R&D growth at over 30% year over year during 2010 through 2013,

the only multi-year stretch of consistent double-digit growth in the past 15 years.

We believe some of these investments produce new services

and expanded existing product families such as iCloud and syry in 2011

iPad mini and apple maps in 2012 an iPhone 5C and even touch ID fingerprint

sensor in 2013. However, significant investments were likely made in new

product categories too, such as mobile payments and

wearables in our view. Apple is stepping up R&D investments even after a period

of prolonged R&D growth.
