Summary

Co-authors and sisters Elaine Heath (former guest) and Janine Heath McGlynn join me to discuss their co-authored memoir "Loving the Hell Out of Ourselves." They start the book with a statement of purpose, "Our heartfelt hope is that this book helps you, our readers, to know that love, not shame, not fear, not hate, not damnation, love is God's meaning." We cover subjects like poverty & neglect, patriarchal authority structures, and the role of faith in healing from abusive home environments. My name is Dan Koch. Like many of you, I've been on a complicated faith journey for a number of years now.

And while I tend to find myself on the progressive side of Christianity, my goal is not to make liberal converts.

0:18.0

I want this show to be a resource for Christians to my right and to my left, as well as

0:23.0

former Christians and non-religious folks, anyone who finds themselves asking difficult questions

0:29.2

about God, science, prayer, fate, suffering, evangelism, and more. So many of us have been given bad answers to those good questions, often by people with

0:42.6

pure intentions.

0:44.1

I want to say that you have permission to take both Christianity and the modern world very

0:50.5

seriously.

0:51.7

And I hope to facilitate that by introducing you to people seeking God across

0:56.5

the Christian spectrum, engaging hard questions in a multitude of ways. Thanks for listening.

Elaine Heath and Janine Heath-McGlynn. Thank you guys so much for being with me today.

1:13.2

Glad to be here. Yeah, thank you. Elaine has been on before. So listeners, you might recognize her name.

1:19.3

She is a theologian. She was here for an episode called The Church of the Future, question mark.

1:24.8

Episode 143. Josh will put a link to that episode in the show notes.

1:29.5

But Elaine, you don't know this. That is one of the 10 or 15 or so most popular episodes of

1:34.8

this podcast. Really? I didn't know that. Wow. And I got a lot of feedback from people

1:40.5

individually, so I know that that's a real number. People really loved it and found your

1:45.2

vision for a sort of interconnected place of healing, you know, connected to the earth, connected to

1:51.0

each other, really inspiring, as did I. So thank you for that. Thanks. That's so great. And Janine,

1:57.6

I'm meeting you for the first time. You are a former high school counselor, now a therapist. And the two of you are sisters. And you have co-authored a book called Loving the Hell Out of Ourselves, a title for which I imagine many writers are supremely jealous, myself included.

2:19.1

What a title.

2:26.2

And it makes me think that if you have a little bit of humor in titling your book,
