0:14.8	through 1st Corinthians 13, Paul's definition of love. In 1998, Disney released
0:22.1	Moulon. The movie was about self-expression. In 1998, Disney released Mulan.
0:23.2	The movie was about self-expression.
0:25.4	So Mulan, she is a warrior at heart, but her culture is trying to force her to become
0:31.8	a prim and proper housewife.
0:35.0	Mulan, she expresses her true self by sneaking off into the military.
0:41.0	Now, Disney expected Mulan to be a hit in China, but it wasn't. It was a total
0:47.6	dud. Chinese audiences disliked Disney's Mulan so much that they called her fake moulon and American moulon.
0:57.6	What happened? Well the original Chinese folk tale called Mulan,
1:04.0	it wasn't a story of self-expression.
1:07.1	It was a story of honor and shame.
1:10.6	It was the story of a family facing public shame because they couldn't send a man to war.
1:17.0	And in the Chinese version, Mulan, she lays down her rights.
1:21.0	She lays down her self-interest by disguising herself as a male and going to
1:26.9	war. Why does she do it? It's not self-expression. It's so that she can protect her family's honor.
1:37.0	We Westerners, we don't live in an honor-shame culture.
1:42.0	Right now, we live in a self-expression culture. I think the difference
1:46.2	between these two kinds of cultures is nicely summarized by the kinds of advice we
1:51.1	give our kids. In the West we tell our kids to stand out, to
1:56.4	express your true self, to be unique. But in the East they've got a old
