Hey everyone. This is Leon from Prologue Projects. On this episode of 5 to 4, Peter, Riannon, and Michael are talking about Louisiana v. Calais, the decision from just last week that essentially ended the Voting Rights Act.

5-4 started this year with a two-part series on the VRA, which was designed to eliminate racial

discrimination in voting and was long considered a crown jewel of the civil rights movement.

Part of the VRA allowed and sometimes required race-conscious redistricting to protect against

racist gerrymandering that diluted the power of minority voters.

But in Calais, the Supreme Court took up the question of whether the creation of these

majority-minority districts as a remedy for vote dilution was an unconstitutional, race-based
