What can I tell you about a place that you were never supposed to know existed?

I can tell you there was a lake, high in the southern neural mountains of Russia. I can tell you what it

looks like on Google Maps, a small blue spot in the shape of a cursive

V. I can tell you that if you weren't looking for it, you'd skip right over it.

I can tell you, you do not want to have a picnic on the shores of this lake.

I can tell you, it's called Lake Carache.

Today, I'm going to try and tell you about Lake Carrache,

a place where fact and fiction blur.

I don't know how to get there.

I don't know if any animals live nearby. I don't know if there's a smell to the lake.

I don't know if the sun shines directly on it

or it dapples through tree cover.

I don't know why this lake was chosen as a nuclear dumping site.

Most of the world may have gone on forever, not knowing about Lake Carache,

if government researchers hadn't spotted something abnormal in the Arctic Ocean,

thousands of miles away, heightened radiation levels.

They traced the radiation back, back to the river,

and followed the trail further upstream,
