It's March 4th, 2008 in Budgery, Australia.

An SUV makes its way down a narrow road.

Its tires kicking up clouds of dirt that dance in the afternoon light.

22-year-old Julian Buchwald and his girlfriend, 17-year-old, Carolyn Watson, are on a date. Their plan is to travel deep into the vast expanse of land that belongs to Julian's family,

something they've done countless times before.

Hiking is one of their main hobbies, but this day is going to be even more special than usual.

Julian has prepared a picnic, which they plan on eating when they reach the stunningly beautiful

waterfall in the woods.

As they continue down the dirt road, Julian spots something.

He eases his foot on the brake and guides the car to a stop at the side of the road.

He explains to Carolyn that he noticed a dead animal next to the track, and he wants to inspect it.

Now, I know, this might sound a little strange, but it's not out of character for Julian.

You see, he enjoys examining roadkill when he comes across it to find out how it died,

and check if it's fresh and intact enough to be cooked.

Carolyn's used to Julian's peculiar interest, but doesn't share his passion for roadside investigation.

So, she stays in the car while Julian disappears down the track and out of view.

She listens to music, whiling away the time until her boyfriend returns.
