Summary

We present the story of the Cox children - two brothers who went missing in the mountains of Pennsylvania in 1856. Thousands of people searched for the young boys for weeks until a man named Jacob Dibert dreamed of their location. Decades later, Jacob’s son dreamed of the location of another missing woman - and, shockingly, his grandson dreamed of the location of yet another missing person. They came to our eyes because they'll see clear the sky, but they all are we, talk to you, she lives there.

Welcome to Strange Familiars. How are you doing tonight, Alison? I'm okay. I got a really interesting show tonight.

0:58.0

A historical episode kind of has a bit of a missing 411 vibe and it's based on a piece of ephemera that we came across by accident, I don't know if by accident.

1:11.0

Serendipity. Yes, it all started with a piece of ephemera we found in one of our digs through the local ephemera minds. We were deep in the ephemera minds.

I think someone had approached me to do this story in the past. They sent some information and I looked at it. I was like, yeah, that would be cool.

1:29.0

And I just followed it away as one of the stories like, yeah, someday. But then we found this book and it kind of brought it right back up to the front.

Before we get to that, I want to mention our Patreon, which is the best way to support the show if you want to help us out.

The Lost Brothers of the Alleghenies. So this book was published. When was this book published?

2:37.0

Into our nine or teens or something around the turn of the century.

2:42.0

Early 1900s. Very early 1900s. We picked it up because it had an interesting story and we brought it home and you started digging into the story even more.

2:52.0

It did not go the way I thought it was going to go. It didn't at all. Well, most of the story takes place in the mid 1800s. It really kind of starts back in the 1700s, the early 1700s, with a man named John DeBert.

3:09.0

Well, he was a French immigrant to the United States. They think French. I've also heard say Holland, but I'm thinking probably not Holland. It's probably some sort of bastardization of what it means to be Dutch around here.

3:22.0

He's either probably French or French German. He's one of the really early immigrants to Pennsylvania. In fact, he's so early that he actually is the one who founds a fort, a trading post.

3:35.0

Yeah, the junior at a river. Yeah, that's kind of middle of the state. At that time, that's way on the frontier.

3:43.0

Yes, in fact, they were the first white settlers west of the Susquehanna River. Okay. So this is 1730s. Yeah, there was not a lot out there.

3:54.0

The story, whether it's in the 1700s version or the mid 1850s version, all takes place in Bedford County, kind of close to where Lake Raystown Resort is.

4:04.0

Okay. That's probably the closest thing that someone might have heard about if they're from this area of Pennsylvania. Otherwise, for everyone else, it's kind of in the middle of nowhere.

4:12.0

Yeah. It's west of here and west again of Michelle. So for people who kind of have a vague map of Pennsylvania and where we are. So what was his deal?
