August 21st, 1995.

Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 529, a twin propeller Embraer 120 Brasilia, with 29 people on board, is on route from Atlanta, Georgia to Gulfport, Mississippi.

While climbing through 18,000 feet, everyone on board hears a loud thud that comes from the left side of the plane, and the pilots struggle to fight with the plane's controls.

The torque on the left engine decreases to zero, and the plane begins rolling left and pitching down, descending at 5,500 feet per minute.

The passengers on the left side of the plane can see the propeller on the number one engine, appears to have exploded, and is a mangled mess distorting the left wing.

The pilot's attempt to return to Atlanta, but realize they're losing altitude too quickly to make it back.

They ask for an alternate airport, and air traffic control suggests West Georgia Regional Airport.

The pilots attempt an emergency landing in a field, but the plane pitches over and begins an uncommitted dive, striking tree tops before hitting the ground nose first.

The aircraft skids along the ground before finally coming to a stop.

What caused the left engine to malfunction? Could anything have been done to make it back to the airport? Did anybody survive this crash? Find out on this episode of Black Box Down.
