Today we are kicking off our two-part series with Rebecca Lucero Jones, who is here to share her story of losing her husband and the unique complications widows face within the Mormon faith. We will be examining the question of what the Mormon afterlife looks like for widows.
In Part 1, Rebecca describes her Mormon upbringing and her eventual marriage to her first husband, Isaac, with whom she had two children before he was tragically killed in a car accident.
Be sure to join us again later this week for the conclusion of Rebecca’s Mormon story and her efforts to obtain a second-sealing clearance from LDS Church leadership.
This is a fascinating and important issue faced by widows in the Mormon church—one we feel deserves to be brought to light.

| 0:00.0 | Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Mormon Stories podcast. I'm your host, |
| 0:03.3 | John DeLinn. It's November 6th, 2025, and today we have an epic, important, fascinating, |
| 0:11.2 | riveting Mormon stories interview. We're going to be covering themes like what happens when |
| 0:17.3 | your dad's excommunicated in the Mormon church? Or what happens when you're |
| 0:21.3 | trying to date Mormon men and a bunch of them are gay? What's that like to date gay Mormon men? |
| 0:26.5 | How does that work out? Um, but even more interestingly, we're going to be talking about what |
| 0:31.6 | happens when your spouse passes away, um, and you're sealed to that spouse in an eternal Mormon marriage and you're a woman, |
| 0:40.7 | and then you find another Mormon man that you want to get married to and get sealed to him, |
| 0:47.0 | but you have to contemplate, do I try and get the ceiling canceled or not? |
| 0:51.0 | Will they let me cancel the ceiling as a woman? |
| 0:54.0 | Some of you may know that |
| 0:55.5 | our current prophet and our previous prophet in the Mormon Church, both were sealed to multiple |
| 1:02.3 | women, and that's been not a problem in the Mormon Church for a long, long time, but there's |
| 1:08.0 | some weird double standard in the church around men being able to be sealed to |
| 1:13.0 | multiple women, but women needing to get a ceiling canceled to a first spouse to then get sealed |
| 1:19.8 | to the second. And we've got someone who went through the process to try and navigate all that. |
| 1:25.8 | And she's got some insight to share on that as well. |
| 1:31.0 | Those are just some of the themes that we're going to be covering today. I'm thrilled to be |
| 1:35.4 | joined with my co-host and partner, Margie. Hey, Margie. Hello. Are you excited for today? |
| 1:41.2 | I am very excited for today. Thanks for asking. I love that sweater. |
| 1:45.2 | Thank you. |
| 1:46.1 | And today it's a hat day for me just because I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. It's looking great. I had a headache. And Margie's like, you can wear a hat. It's okay. Wear a hat. That's right. I'm like, okay. So anyway, and most importantly, we're excited to have our guest, who is also a professor in Texas. |
