In our last episode, we discussed Robert Rossin's 1961 drama The Hustler, featuring

Paul Newman as a pool shark whose

talent is brilliant enough for him to beat the best players in the world, but whose self-destructive

tendencies get in the way. If you replace the word pool with ping pong, that same description

would apply to Timothy Shalameh's title character in the new Josh Safty movie Marty Supreme.

Set in 1950s, New York, Marty Supreme follows Salome's table tennis wizard from Paris to Tokyo

as he seeks to triumph in a sport that's growing in popularity overseas but hasn't gained much traction in the States.

Marty still sees himself as a star and behaves like

one too, which turns his life into a chaotic maelstrom, not unlike the life of Adam Sandler's

jeweler and Josh and Benny Safdi's previous film Uncut Gems. With his girlfriend Rachel,

played by Odessa at ASEAN, pregnant back home, Marty flies to London for a world championship,

but puts himself in the middle of a relationship between Penn Magnet Milton Rockwell,

played by Kevin O'Leary, and retired actress and socialite Kay Stone, played by Gwyneth Paltrow.
