The Battle of Luz in 1915 was a turning point in the Great War,

the first time large numbers of men of Kitchener's army went into attack on the Western Front.

What can we find of it more than a century later as we visit Luz in a day.

As September moves towards October, it's autumn on the old front line.

I saw my last swifts of the year over Thiepvale when we did the Silent Cities tour the other week.

And now the trees and lanes and the fields across those battlefields of the Great War will be changing as the seasons change. The colours will return and bathe that

landscape in a different kind of aura compared to the summer with those long days of bright

sun. Now the long shadows return, changing the landscape

in so many different ways. And I hope to see some of you out on the Western Front, on the

battlefields of the Great War, across that old front line over the course of the coming

months.

This week we had a podcast supporters evening where we were joined by Sarah Nathaniel of the Commonwealth Wargraves Commission to talk about their non-commemoration project,

in particular the work they're doing to address the issue of many non-commemorated African soldiers

who had died in the African campaigns of the First

World War. And it made me realise that this is an aspect of the Great War we have yet to cover

on the old front line, and we will at some point. But it was good to see a record audience
