One of the reasons they ask this a lot is because we don't like uncertainty. We want to know what the future is

going to bring. And so one of the ways you can kind of get a feel for how things might go

is to look back at the past. And for stocks, for the U.S. stock market, we have right about 100 years of really good, robust data on the performance of markets.

And it's really interesting when you dig into it a little bit.

If you look back, you'll you'll see that in the 1950s when the the decade in which tom and i were

born the stock market in that decade returned a whopping 20 percent the s and p 500 for the whole

decade well i'm sorry that's average annual return 20% per year

wow almost 20% per year over that decade that was coming that was a good decade for stocks wow

now the second best was the 1990s yeah with an 18% average annual return for the S&P 500, the 500 biggest U.S.

stocks. That was followed by the 1980s with just over 17% average annual return. That sounds
