Summary

You know that catchy jingle that starts our show? That's by The Kominas, a punk band that's been influential in South Asian and Muslim scenes. One of the guitarists, Shahjehan Khan, is a longtime friend of the show who has been open about his issues with mental health and addiction. There's a new Kominas album too this month, "The Systems Are Down," so we bring on Shahj to discuss about his struggles with addiction, how he's turned around his life, and releasing the album on September 11th. Warning: we discuss include depression, suicidal ideation, addiction, and related topics.

Also--We're bringing "Halal Or Not?" back, but this time we're helping our listeners make halal not decisions. Call (646) 50-HALAL and tell us what you need help figuring out--we may call you back to figure it out live on the show.

We've got a new idea to bring back the classic segment you know and love, halal or not. In the past, we've asked us whether they thought ultra-important topics were halal or not. Maharshala Ali, cargo shorts, that terrible Superman movie from a couple years ago. This time, we want to hear about your halal or not challenges. It could be literally about anything you need to help figuring out, what to make for lunch, a job move, a relationship challenge, your next Netflix binge, anything you want. Are those things halal or not? Call us at 64650 halal and leave a voicemail with your name, your number, and a quick description of your challenge, and we may call you back to figure it out on the show. You have until October 1st to get on this, so start dial in now. Again, that number is

alternative immigrant Muslim and Dasey Internet.

There were a few blogs and sites.

I used to read things like Sapya Mutiny, Alt-Muslima, Muslim Wake Up. I also use things like Live Journal, MySpace, and Facebook groups to connect with

folks who were talking about their identity in a way that I had never heard before, that I was

not hearing in my own community. It was in those spaces that honestly, a lot of the ideas that

move me to make the show began. Obviously, I have my own unique interpretation and take on things,

but in those spaces, I learned that being Muslim did not mean that you had to be perfect,

that you could be an immigrant, Desi, Pakistani Muslim,

struggle with all the things that young American teens do,

2:15.6

like sex, drugs and rock and roll and still be Muslim.

2:19.5

And rock and roll did end up becoming a major part of that scene.
