Welcome back everyone to the Epic Gardening Podcast. We have Meg Kouten back on the

0:17.0

show, founder of Sea to Fork. We're talking this week about fall gardening, all sorts

0:21.7

of things, when it comes to great varieties, season extensions, succession planting,

0:27.5

and Meg, you've got this set of recommendations for long season crops to plant today. So I

0:34.4

guess the first question I have is like, what do you count as a long season crop?

0:38.2

Yeah, so I kind of think of, I break down our crops into like quick crops, main season

0:45.0

crops, things that will crop in like around three months, and then a long season crop

0:48.6

is like a four month or a longer time frame in the garden. And the reason I kind of like

0:53.2

to distinguish those three buckets is because a four season, four month season is kind

1:00.5

of like a growing season for a lot of people, right? Four to five months in kind of the

1:05.8

colder northern climate. So anything that's going to take the majority of our growing

1:11.1

season to mature, I consider a long season crop.

1:15.3

Okay, that makes sense. And then as far as recommendations for you, like the stuff that

1:20.0

you really like to grow, what are some of the standouts, like maybe like three or four

1:24.3

of your favorites?

1:25.3

Yeah, so a lot of these crops, so that they're going to get so to different points along

1:32.3

the season, but they're all going to hit, you know, they're stride in the fall. And that

1:37.9

is harvesting or curing or so, Brussels sprouts are one of my very, very favorite fall

1:45.6

crops. And they're kind of the mainstay of our garden because I have them sowed right

1:50.5

now. I sowed them. I sowed them in the end of April here every year. I sowed them earlier.

1:57.1

We've actually harvested Brussels sprouts in the middle of July here in Minnesota one year.

2:03.7

And I remember like boasting to one of my organic gardener friends, farmer friends at a farmer's
