Summary

Join Scotty and Cory Reece for a long run in which they discuss Cory's life in running, his time away from the sport, and his reflections on having a life intertwined with ultrarunning and then stepping away.  Fresh perspectives, realizations and insight and much much more.  Cory also talks about his recent visit back to the sport at the Jackpot ultras.  They also talk music a little as Cory is an accomplished pianist.  This is an important discussion that should raise a few issues many people have not considered.  Who would I be without running?

All right, you guys, this is a really interesting one. I have a long run with me and my old friend, Corey Reese. If you've been around the sport for a while, you knew Corey or you know of Corey. Corey was everywhere. He's an author. He's an endurance writer. He used to write for ultra running magazine. Basically, Corey was part of the whole zeitgeist of ultra running for many,

many, many years. And then he kind of stepped away. And he recently came back and did the jackpot,

ultras in Las Vegas, had a neat experience with his daughter. And he has a video project coming out

related to that. So I said we should talk. And we sat down. We talk about life. We talk about running. We talk about identity. Your identity being wrapped up in your running. What you're going to do when you can't run or when you don't want to run. A lot of things about life. A little bit of music at the end. it'll irritate some people, but I think it's a

really good and important conversation because I think, you know, speaking as someone who couldn't

1:00.1

run for two years and who's just about to start running, by the way, I know what it feels like

1:06.0

to lose that part of your life. And I don't think enough of us make sure that we protect ourselves in the event that we either

1:14.5

choose to or, you know, have no choice and can't run for a while.

1:19.1

And put all our value and all our self-esteem and all our, you know, we have to be more than

1:24.5

just our running accomplishments, you know.

1:27.4

And a lot of, a lot of you guys are. And I are. And I'm not calling anybody out. I'm just making an observation that I've seen a lot of people over the years that they can't run anymore and then they disappear. They're not there for the community. They don't, they're not interested in the sport anymore. It makes you wonder why you're here and what you're doing while you're here and what you're going to do when you're gone.

1:44.7

So I don't mean to belabor things, but it was an interesting and thought-provoking conversation.

1:50.9

One side note, both the Sugar Badger and the 50K and the 50 mile are less than 50 spots

1:58.6

to go.

1:59.3

And usually those get bought up like in the weeks before the race.

2:04.1

So again, if you're going to do it, do it now.

2:06.8

There's a price hike on the 31st.

2:08.3

So if you wait until after the 31st, you give me $25 extra dollars that I can go and, you

2:13.5

know, buy myself a McDonald's or something.

2:16.8

But get in. If you want to do those races, sign up. Also, the Badger 100. Those three races are in jeopardy of selling out. So get your registrations in. I'm very excited. There's more people signed up for the Sugar Badger right now than finished last year. And we have two more months to go. So it's going to be a good one. It's going to be a big one.

2:34.9

We're going to have a good time.

2:36.5

So listen to me and Corey.
