Summary

Join Scotty and Western States Race Director Craig Thornley for a long run in which they discuss his life in running, how he came to be the Western States RD, what that entails, how Western States works, their approaches to emrging issues in the sport, the lottery, doping, gender, and his recovery from knee surgery.  And much much more.  It's like evesdropping on RD's chatting.  And I think you will like it.

All right, you guys. This is going to be a long run episode of me and Craig Thornley, who is the race director of the Western States Endurance Run. And although we had met before, we hadn't had a long talk. And I've been circling him for a while. And I really wanted to sit down and talk to him and get to know him because obviously we know a lot of things

0:20.9

about the race and we know a lot of things about things that happen in the race. We might even know

0:24.4

his name, but do we really know him? Do we really get him? You know, what's he like? And so what I

0:29.6

tried to do is just have a discussion with him. We talked about some of my objections and

0:34.9

problems with the race. We talked about, you know, hot issues in ultra running.

0:40.4

It was a really, really fun conversation. At the end of it, I kind of felt like I wish he was

0:44.6

like a neighbor of mine because we really had a lot in common and we had a really nice chat,

0:49.5

and I think you're really going to like them and learn a lot about Western States through it.

0:53.1

So other than that, progress, I'm not running yet. I've got a couple more weeks to go. And then the coaching calls, which we're starting to record, are going to be starting to release. I also have coming up, Kira Henninger, who's a really, really great race director from California. I have another gang show coming as well. So we're going to pretty much be on schedule after this, I think. And I apologize for the delay. But, you know, like I said, my resolution is to not put out shows, just to put out shows to wait and put out shows that I really want to put out. All the races are open for registration. The Badger 100 is maybe a little more than half full, but it's going to fill up.

1:30.4

It's probably going to sell out.

1:31.6

Sugar Badger is more than half full.

1:33.7

The 50 mile and 50K are probably 100% going to sell out.

1:38.2

The half marathon, maybe you have a little bit more time.

1:41.8

But, again, our deferralral policy you can defer for no reason

1:45.8

or any reason up until about two weeks before the race and for full credit for a race to use

1:51.7

anytime you want so if you're on the fence and you're thinking about it just go ahead and sign up

1:55.9

you can use those credits later on for a different race but you know it really helps us if you sign up early because the more money we have, the more money we can spend, the more awesome we can make the race. So, you know, I'm not trying to hawking into, you know, buying something that you don't want to buy, but I'm just saying if you're thinking about it, just sign up and worry about it later. You can also transfer your entries too. You know, you can sell them, transfer them.

2:17.7

That's all fine with me, too.

2:19.1

So, with that in mind, buckle up for a really fun conversation

2:23.8

with a really interesting and good guy, me and Craig Thornley.

2:31.7

No sponsors.

2:33.9

I've got to get some sponsors. I gotta get some sponsors.
