Behind me is a portrait of the Roman Senate that we're far away from,

which is why we can enjoy these sessions with our friends, the retired centurions,

who have come to enjoy our conversation about the 21st century, pretty much on their faces.

Really? That's what it's going to come to? Really? Really?

And we go, well, maybe.

This evening, we've been discussing the present circumstance in what America calls foreign affair outside the air.

That would be Russia and China.

We've also been discussing domestic affair that would be deploying the National Guard and elements of the security apparatus to

D.C. because of the president's assertion of emergency powers. Now the conversation turns on

deploying to Chicago, deploying to Baltimore. other cities will be mentioned soon enough.

And then we will turn to the assumptions that emperors and kings make, that are lessons

for those of us who are observing Mr. Trump, conduct his affairs as an emperor with the 21st century trapping.

We begin, however, with Putin, because a week ago we were speculating about what

has Putin won and what was achieved in anchorage with a meeting between the presidents,

or as Germanicus portrayed, the meeting at

tilts it in the Neiman River on a raft between Napoleon I and Alexander I.

Since then there was the meeting in the White House, and after that the conversations in several
