and the Prime Minister has just announced that she is resigning.

This is what she had to say in Downing Street a few minutes ago.

I recognise, though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate

on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.

I have therefore spoken to his majesty, the King, to notify him

that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.

James, have we been a little bit surprised by the pace at which she went?

Yes, last night was clearly shambolic, but I think the view

earlier today, this morning was, but it still had a little bit of time to run.

There aren't that many MPs in Westminster today, because it's a first day,

and the view this morning was that Liz Tross was not minded to resign.

She has now resigned in a remarkably composed statement, I thought,

and she has announced that there will be a week-long leadership election,

so this time next week there will be a new tour leader and a new Prime Minister.
