Summary
Statistics tell us that 1 out every 6 men are sexually abused as children (1 out of 4 women), but did you know that the average man holds onto that secret shame of abuse for an average of 25 years?
And I can attest to the validity of that study, because I held onto my secret shame for 19 years before I told anyone.
Now as a sexual abuse survivor, myself, I’ve made it my mission to openly talk about sexual abuse when we launched this podcast over 6 years ago; but today I invited, Licensed Psychologist, Dr. Douglas Carpenter, to talk to us about the shame associated with sexual abuse.
So, if you’ve ever been stuck in shame; struggled with your identity as a man; felt helpless, hopeless, and should I say, even worthless, then you need to listen today’s guest.
Dr. Doug and his wife, Mary, who is a licensed social worker, are the founders of Insight Counseling Services. Dr. Doug is the author of two books: Secret Shame and Childhood Trauma and the Non-Alpha Male.
Dr. Doug has a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Forest Institute of Professional Psychology; he has a Master of Science in Counseling and Substance Abuse Rehabilitation from Pace University, and has an Associates of Arts in Theological Studies from Kent Christian College.
Dr. Doug has a keen ability to translate academic psychology and sound clinical research into clinical practice and in his writings. He has extensive study and therapeutic skills in the area of gender role conflict, shame, sexual abuse and trauma, and chemical and behavioral addictions.
