Summary

Your past doesn’t have to define you. This week’s feast of St. Matthew inspires us to consider how the God who transformed this sinner-tax collector into the great apostle can transform us in our own walk with Him today. Edward Sri takes us on a mini-tour in Rome to two of his favorite pieces of art depicting the life of this great saint. Along the way, we learn how to answer the call of God in our lives and take the next step of faith to which he is inviting us. God had amazing things in store for Matthew, but he first needed to leave his money bags behind. What might the Lord be asking you to do to follow him more closely this week? Put yourself in Matthew’s shoes and be ready not only to answer the call, but live it deeply day-by-day.

0:21.6

city of Rome and I want to take you to two churches in Rome

0:24.8

that are related to the great feast day the church is preparing to celebrate this

0:29.2

week. You may know that the church celebrates the Feast of. Matthew this week on September 21st and I think of all the

0:36.3

apostles to me Matthew is the most fascinating he is the most I mean, think about who this man was and what Jesus

0:46.6

did in his life. I mean, this man is a tax collector. Now, in our culture today, we may not

0:51.7

like the IRS or people that come to take our taxes, but I want

0:55.5

you understand what it meant to be a tax collector in Matthew's day, in the first century

1:00.1

world of Judaism in his day.

1:03.0

Being a tax collector meant you were a Jew that was chosen by the Roman government

1:08.0

to go around and collect the taxes on behalf of the Roman Empire.

1:12.0

So this is a man who's collaborating with the Roman enemy,

1:15.8

who's oppressing the Jewish people.

1:17.4

He would have been viewed as a great traitor.

1:19.8

And he also would have been viewed as a great sinner because many tax collectors were known for taking too much money for themselves

1:27.4

And so they were viewed as unjust and exploiting the Jewish people so think about what we read about in the Gospels, how Jesus

1:35.8

was known for spending time with the tax collectors. He was known for hanging out at the

1:40.4

tax collectors office, for sharing meals with the tax collectors.

1:44.6

Just think about how shocking that would have been.

1:46.4

Why is Jesus hanging out with these people?

1:48.3

And then one day Jesus actually turns and points to one of these tax collectors
