Greek mythology tells us of a beautiful youth who loved no one until the day he saw his own reflection in the water.

And he fell in love with that reflection.

He was so love-sick that he finally wasted away and died and was turned into a flower that bears his name, narcissist.

I am personally convinced in my own heart that narcissism is at the root of every broken home

and at the root of every divorce in this country.

Narcissism is at the very core of the heartache for those who are victims of divorce, whether

they are children or adults.

And I pray to God, there will be no trace of narcissism in any of our hearts.

A lady who came to me and was talking about how that she was absolutely adamant, that the marriage is over.

And as I began to probe and began to listen and begin to hear what she's saying, and finally she said, look, you don't understand.

We are both in love with one person.

Him. Yeah. We are both in love with one person, him.

And that reminded me of the husband who won a trip for two to Hawaii.

He went twice.

What I want to confess to you, a basic reluctance on my part to deal with these two verses

as we've been going through the Gospel of Matthew chapter 5.

And this reluctance partially because divorce is an emotional and complex subject.

But even more than that, it is a subject that touches emotions at a very deep level.

My friend and mentor, John Stott, said the following words,

and he can express them far better than I can express my own feelings.

There is almost no unhappiness so poignant as the unhappiness of an unhappy marriage.

And almost no tragedy so great as the degeneration of what God mean for love and fulfillment into non-relationship,
