Summary

In this video by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi, we are acquainted at length about two other Sahabas - Adi Ibn Hatim RA and Thumamah Ibn Uthal RA. The father of Adi Ibn Hatim was the most generous of all people, a poet and the chieftain of his tribe. He held great authority and was respected greatly amongst his people.his daughter, Saffanah, once happened to be captured by the troops of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when they came searching for Ibn Hatim RA. He had actually fled from his city and his whereabouts were not be heard of. Saffanah was a braveheart and confidently stood in front of the Prophet ﷺ and demanded her freedom. But she was reminded of her brother everytime she made an appeal. Finally, when she was set free, she went in search of her brother Ibn Hatim. Having finally found him, he was rebuked incessantly for his cowardly behaviour . A wish for a meeting with the Prophet ﷺ lands him at the doorsteps of the messenger of Allah SAW and Adi RA narrates, “I came to the house of the Prophet ﷺ and he said,: “O Adi, accept Islam and you will be safe!” to which I replied, “I already have a religion.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “I know more about religion than you do.” I said, “You know more about my religion than I do?” The Prophet said, “Yes, are not you from the Rukusiyyah? And when you go to war, do you not share one quarter of your people’s booties?” I said, “Yes.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “I know what is preventing you from accepting Islam. You think that the only people to follow this religion are the weak and oppressed who have no strength.he further continues,’ Perhaps, the only thing that prevents you from entering this religion is what you see of the small number of Muslims and their numerous enemies. By Allah, the time is near when you would hear of the woman setting out from Qadisiyyah on her camel until she reaches this house, not fearing anyone except Allah. The Prophet ﷺ then quoted his third reason,’Perhaps what prevents you from entering this religion is that you only see that sovereignty and power rest in the hands of those who are not Muslims. By Allah, you will soon hear of treasures which we shall acquire.’ Do listen to the complete hadith to understand how his conversion to Islam took place. He fought alongside Ali ibn Abi Talib RA in the Battle of Camel and Battle of Siffin and died at the age of 102 in the year 67 H in Kufa where his grave remains to this day. Next in line for elucidation is Thumamah ibn Uthal RA who was not as famous as Ali Ibn Hatim RA but he was a handsome man who was very beloved to tribe of Yamamah which was his origin. When he was captured by the troops of the Prophet ﷺ, he said to his family, "Get what food you can and send it to Thumamah ibn Uthal." which was from whatever was reserved for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The Prophet ﷺ then approached Thumamah RA hoping to encourage him to get converted to Islam. "What do you have to say for yourself?" he asked. "If you want to kill me as revenge," Thumamah replied, "You will have someone of royalty to kill. If, out of your kindness, you want to forgive, I will be grateful. If you want money in compensation, I shall give you whatever you ask." The Prophet ﷺ then repeated the same questions for three days only to receive the same answer. Then the Prophet ﷺ ordered his people to set Thumamah free. An interesting incident happened when Thumamah RA left the mosque of the Prophet ﷺ. He rode to a luscious garden near Madina and bathed himself and went back to the Prophet ﷺ house. He then stood before the Muslims and proclaimed Shahadah. He then went to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Muhammad, by God, there was never on this earth a face more despicable than yours. Now, yours is the dearest face of all to me." Thumamah RA then left to fulfill his Umrah and upon reaching Makkah, he began chanting in a resonant voice: "Labbayk Allahumma labbayk. Labbayk La shareeka Laka labbayk. Innal hamda wan ni'mata Laka wal mulk. Laa shareeka Lak. “ He was thus the first Muslim on the face of the earth to recite the Talbiyah. No hadith have been narrated by Thumamah RA.
