0:00.0 | Well, hi, everybody. Welcome to Smarter News and our live podcast today. It is summer, |
0:12.6 | and because it is summer, it feels like we need a little something different when it comes to the |
0:16.6 | news. And my greatest concern is making sure that we use your time efficiently and you have time for |
0:22.7 | other things. And one of the major problems with the news is that there's just so much clutter. There's so |
0:27.2 | much coming at you on a regular basis that it's hard to know what really matters, what to prioritize |
0:32.5 | and what to really spend your time on. So you end up spending your time on all sorts of things |
0:36.0 | and not really generally, generally feeling satisfied with the news. So what I'd like to do this summer, |
0:41.7 | and we're going to experiment a little bit with it today, is do some live podcasts for you, |
0:46.3 | get you caught up and get you out the door as fast as possible and take your questions live |
0:50.8 | as they come up because we want to make sure that we're providing a news |
0:55.1 | service here. And that's really important for us. Obviously at Smarter News, we're dedicated to |
0:59.7 | quick, concise, nonpartisan news. On this day in history, there was a very interesting event |

1:12.9 | immediately. It was in 1920 when that amendment was ratified. It was passed in 1919, ratified in |
1:20.1 | 1920, and women now have the right to vote, obviously. There's no putting that genie back in |
1:25.3 | the bottle. Sorry. Now women are the majority of American |
1:30.4 | voters and also vote at higher rates than men. So an interesting reminder of how quickly things can |
1:38.1 | change in just a short period of time, just a little bit more than 100 years ago. It is also |
1:43.0 | important to note, though, that many states actually had previously provided the |
1:48.3 | right to vote for women, including the state of Wyoming, which was the very first. |
1:52.3 | So depending on where you live, women may have been granted the right to vote earlier, |
1:57.0 | but it did not become a constitutional amendment until 19, 19, 20. And so here we are |
