Today we're talking about chapters 9-12 of Pride and Prejudice.

In these chapters, Jane's severe cold is essentially holding Lizzie Prisoner at Netherfield.

Lizzie wants to go home, heates staying at Bingley's house with his sisters and Darcy.

But Jane is too sick to be moved, and so Lizzie stays at Netherfield to take care of her.

Darcy is also being held prisoner in these chapters by Elizabeth.

As long as she's in the same house as him, he is going to keep falling in love with her and he does not want to fall in love with her.

In fact, and here's a quote, he really believed that if it were not for the inferiority of her connections, he should be in some danger.

The chapters end with the two parties finally being separated, but the dynamics between Darcy and Elizabeth have shifted seismically in those few days.

Here's the breakdown chapter by chapter.

Chapter 9 starts with Mrs. Bennett coming to visit Netherfield in order to check on Jane.

The way this plays out is interesting. Lizzie sends for Mrs. Bennett.

Lizzie wants to know Mrs. Bennett's point of view on Jane's illness because she trusts her mother.

Mrs. Bennett thinks Jane is well enough not to worry, but she tells Bingley that Jane can't be safely moved home, so Jane must stay at Netherfield.

And after she checks on Jane, she sits down to chat with Bingley and Darcy and completely humiliates Lizzie.

She's too obvious about throwing Jane at Bingley and is uncultured in front of Darcy.
