We'll only be talking about one chapter today, but it is the longest chapter in the whole

novel, and it is when everything changes.

We arrive at the Darcy estate, Pemberley, and it's awesome.

The grounds are gorgeous, and as the housekeeper gives the gardeners and Lizzie a tour of the

house, we see that it is so tastefully furnished and beautiful.

Austin spends time telling us that the grounds complement the house and the house complements

the grounds, and the housekeeper just can't stop complementing Darcy.

It is a love fest, and it is all to do with Pemberley.

There's something natural and almost moral about the place.

The beauties of an estate like Pemberley are not the same as the beauties of a penthouse

in Soho and a Lamborghini, which is to say the beauties of Pemberley are the beauties of

a well-governed estate, and a well-governed estate is an estate that has good husbandry, whose

owner and proprietor cares for the tenants and the plantings of trees and the buildings

in a way that speaks to the best of an older-fashioned idea of an aristocratic society,
