Good morning. It is Saturday, April 2nd, Day 38 of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Happy Ramadan to those of you who are celebrating. I'm Ali Valshi, live in Lviv, Ukraine, a bustling city that since the start of this war

has become a sort of a safe haven for outside government embassies, those fleeing the main fighting

in the eastern part of the country, and for many of the reporters here covering the story.

Even with the recent Russian missile attacks in this city, and with the

exception of the nightly curfew, life essentially goes on in Leviv. Elsewhere in the country,

though, things are different. Ukrainian forces have mounted several successful counterattacks and have

reclaimed some territory, notably in areas and towns around Keeve, Kharkiv, and

Chernaiv. In his newest nightly address, a series that's become akin to FDR's fireside chats,

the Ukrainian president, Volodomir Zelensky, accused retreating Russian forces of planting

landmines and booby-trapping their dead bodies with explosives, of which

there are many.

Late yesterday, the United States Defense Department announced an additional $300 million

in security assistance for the Ukrainians, including laser-guided rocket systems, more

switchblade drones, vehicles, night vision devices, communication systems,

non-standard machine guns, and medical and field supplies. The U.S. also says it will work

with its allies to help get Soviet-made tanks to the Ukrainians. This is the first time that

America will help transfer tanks into Ukraine during the war. The announcement came

after hours after an attack on a fuel depot that was inside Russia in the town of Belgarod,

which is about 20 miles from the Ukrainian border. Take a look at this video. It shows the night
