Summary

Hellllllo Cult babes. Finally got a new AOL 60 day trial to check my e-mail and I’ve got some juicy listener stories to share with y’all this week. From a personal connection to episode 48: Death of a Cheerleader, to a cult babe who spent time in prison with some....interesting inmates. Today’s episode is sponsored by Wondery and the Los Angeles Time’s new show, Detective Trapp. Anaheim investigator Julissa Trapp is not like other detectives. She’s the only woman on the homicide squad, and a skilled chameleon: undercover cop in vice stings, crime-scene commander, patient confidante of killers. A master interrogator, she invokes her personal experience – and deepest griefs -- as a tool to elicit confessions. When a young woman’s body is found at a trash-sorting plant, Trapp learns the murder may be linked to the disappearance of three other women in nearby Santa Ana. Trapp embarks on a dark journey that brings her face to face with a man who takes “a little piece of her soul.”

And I promise there will be no repeat stories. And today's little leader, I feel like I'm a little bit more together than J-J-J-J-J-J-N-W-Nope.

1:11.0

We're not quite there yet.

1:13.0

October. Clearly not together.

What to plug. What to plug. I did a video last week with Mikey for her channel, Glamingor, where I turned her into a turkey and it's fucking funny. So go watch that. If you haven't watched it yet, I'll put a link in the show notes for today's episode.

1:31.0

Last week's episode covered cannibal arm and mives and it's fucking horrifying. So listen to that if you have not listened to that.

1:38.0

But the episode before episode 48, Death of a Cheerleader, I talked about a story that took place in Northern California where I grew up.

1:46.0

I knew when I uploaded that episode that somehow some way I would receive insight info on the case because it's where I'm from and I fucking did because this cult never lets me down. And I don't really ever acknowledge the growth that Cult Leader has had, but the bigger the Cult Leader audience is the bigger the party.

2:02.0

And it's been growing like a wildfire, which I'm super grateful for and it's largely because you guys keep sharing it.

2:09.0

But I feel so supported by you guys and it's really cool because the bigger this thing gets the more I get to hear personal connections to some of the cases that I've covered.

2:17.0

So back to this episode, Death of a Cheerleader, I received some messages pertaining directly to the case this source wanted to remain anonymous and I'm going to read you the messages that she said back and forth with me on Instagram.

2:30.0

While I read through these, I'm probably going to jump in from time to time just to kind of explain things because I'm just reading them verbatim.

2:37.0

So this message, the first message came in at 5 a.m. on November 13th, which is shortly after my episode went live. And she wrote, so I know, well, knew the costus family.

2:49.0

Peter was in three of my classes at OIS, which is a Rinda intermediate school for those of you who don't know the this crime took place in Rinda, California.

3:01.0

She wrote, Kirsten died this summer before middle school, but then it was just 7th and 8th grade in middle school. So I met him this summer after his sister died.

3:10.0

For the four months following the crime, you were right. The FBI and police interviewed everybody, but because of the sort of buzzardness of it all, it got pushed towards one girl in particular Nancy Cain.

3:22.0

She was goth and quote unquote weird and they went after her hard and it destroyed her life. The kids at Miramani were assholes. They spray painted her locker.

3:32.0

They threw shit at her in the hall when she was walking down the halls and I'm pretty sure she left. So that was the first messages that I got.
