I'm Gretchen Rubin and this is a little happier. Now you're probably not listening to this

0:05.1

episode of a little happier on the very day that it went live, but in case you are, today is

0:10.1

a Labor Day here in the United States. It's a day off from work, so everyone looks forward to it

0:15.2

for that reason. And I think that Labor Day is a great reminder to think about our own labor,

0:20.2

our own work life, just as we should think about being grateful for everything that other people do

0:25.2

1:21.7

worth the trouble? I just power through. And that's often not very effective. It's important to work

1:29.2

hard, yes, but I should also work smart and think about how I can achieve my aims in the most efficient

1:35.2

way without a lot of wasted effort. And Elizabeth, my sister, told me this story that seems relevant.

1:42.8

In the world of acting, Lee Strasberg taught an approach called method acting, and in method

1:47.4

acting in order to develop a deep understanding of their roles, actors use techniques to recreate

1:53.3

the character's emotional state by recalling emotions or sensations from their own life.

1:59.3

And Dustin Hoffman, the actor who stars in the graduate, Tootsie, all the president's men,
