Summary

My fascination with Dolly Parton continues, and her answer to Barbara Walters in a 1977 interview is a good example of why we shouldn’t under-estimate people who are different from us. I'm Gretchen Rubin and this is a little happier.

0:03.8

I know, I know, I said I'd come to the end of my fascination with Dolly Parton,

0:09.6

but apparently I have not. One of the things that fascinates me about Dolly Parton

0:15.6

is that I think she's so underestimated. Of course, she's a superstar and celebrated,

0:21.8

but I think that people don't appreciate how thoughtful, strategic, and far-sighted she has been

0:28.4

during her decades-long career and in all of her accomplishments.

0:44.6

From what I've observed, she's very skillful at turning interviews the way she wants,

0:50.3

and maintaining a certain playful image in the public eye.

0:54.3

I wish that over the years, interviewers had asked her more thoughtful questions,

0:59.4

For instance, I was very struck by one fleeting moment in an interview she did with Barbara

1:09.8

Walters way back in 1977 when Dolly Parton was just 31 on the Barbara Walters special TV show.

1:18.2

Dolly Parton is looking as she always does with a big blonde wig, a bright turquoise outfit,

1:24.4

a big turquoise rose in her hair, lots of makeup.

1:28.6

Barbara Walters literally asks her if she gives her measurements.

1:34.4

And here's part of the conversation where Dolly Parton is describing her attitude towards show

1:40.8

business. I know exactly what I'm doing, and I can change it at any time.

1:44.8

There are more jokes about myself than anybody.

1:48.2

Because I know, like I say, I'm sure of myself as a person.

1:52.4

I'm sure of my talent.
