I'm Gretchen Rubin and this is a little happier. In the ordinary course of our

0:05.6

everyday lives it's rare or at least it's relatively rare for me to hear something

0:11.0

that moves us deeply and sometimes this kind of profound emotion is inspired

0:15.7

by a very surprising or unexpected source. I had an experience like this recently related to a dog. I loved our miniature Schnauzer

0:24.9

patiwack when I was growing up and I love our cockapoo Barnumby now and I like

0:29.8

1:12.0

She and Miles met at the Because You Care Animal

1:15.2

Shelter in Pennsylvania. Miles, who was known as Tank at the time, tended to

1:21.0

snarl, growl and snap at everyone at the shelter.

1:25.0

But when Christine Longnecker showed up, Miles walked quietly to the front of his kennel and

1:29.4

sat down.

1:31.4

The article quotes Longneard telling the story.

1:35.0

He looked me straight in the eye and said,

1:37.0

clear as day, I just want to be a good boy.

1:41.0

All of a sudden this overwhelming sadness watched over me, the sense of his not being able to prove himself because he had been told that he was a bad dog.

1:50.0

My heart broke into a million pieces.
