I'm Gretchen Rubin and this is a little happier.

And this is a memory that I have from college.

I was a junior in college and I was studying up in the stacks of sterling library.

I had an exam coming up so I was staying out there late and I happened to look out the

window and I saw Toads Place.

Now Toads, if you know New Haven, is this sort of old famous bar?

It's a place where bands play and there was a whole group of people lined up in front

of getting ready to go in to drink and listen to music and to dance and have fun and

there I was studying the history and culture of Japan in the hauen period.

And I remember looking at it all those people and thinking, am I wasting my youth?

Here I am up in the library instead of going to Toads.

Not that I even really wanted to go to Toads but you know what I mean.

I still think about that question.

Was I wasting my youth?

I don't think so.

I suppose you can never really know the answer to a question like that.

But even if it's not possible to decide whether one course of action is a waste of time

or not, nevertheless it's an important question to consider.

Am I wasting my youth?

Am I wasting this time of life?
