Summary

It's September, the leaves are starting to turn, and we're kicking off our Autumn season with a vital conversation about the power of writing for change. Our guest is the author Shon Faye, who joined us to discuss her hotly anticipated first book, The Transgender Issue: An Argument for Justice. It's a necessary and inspiring text in which she argues that we're having the wrong conversation about trans people, and that the struggle for trans liberation is all of our struggle. In honour of Shon's book, which aims to change the terms of a cultural conversation, we'll talk more widely about books that seek to shift perspectives, including the ones that shifted ours. It's good to be back! Recommendations on the theme, Writing for Change: Octavia: The Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud Carrie: Ways of Seeing by John Berger General Recommendations: Octavia: Paul by Daisy Lafarge Shon: The Right to Sex by Amia Srinivasan Carrie: Circe by Madeline Miller Find a list of all recommended books at: https://uk.bookshop.org/shop/litfriction Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/litfriction Email us: litfriction@gmail.com Tweet us & find us on Instagram: @litfriction This episode is sponsored by Picador: https://www.panmacmillan.com/picador

I'm Carrie Plitt, here as always with my co-host, Octavia Bright.

0:22.6

Hi, Octavia. How are you? I am exhausted.

0:24.6

Oh.

0:26.6

But not in a bad way.

0:27.6

I've just been intently busy with work the last few weeks and also seeing friends more

0:32.6

because it's been enough time since my second vaccination.

0:35.6

So it's been wonderful, but I'm also completely

0:38.4

out of practice with pacing myself and getting the balance right, and I've just run myself a bit

0:44.2

ragged. But also, the main thing is, please allow me a Leo moment, but I'm really looking forward

0:49.7

to next week because I'm turning 35 on Thursday. And I have a very good feeling about this stage of life.

0:57.0

I think this is like a good middle bit.

1:00.5

And also any excuse to eat lots of cake makes me very happy.

1:04.0

Although by the time this plays out, it's going to, I will have been 35 for like a month.

1:09.5

Well, happy both early and late birthday. I'm so sad to be missing it. I'm very

1:15.8

devastated that I can't celebrate with you. I always seem to be away on your birthday. I know.

1:20.2

I mean, I try not to take it personally, but it's really rude of me. It is rude of you. What it means,

1:25.3

my love, is when you get back, you're going to have to make me a cake. Of course. I'm not great at making cakes, so maybe I can make you something else.

1:32.7

But I wish you all of the cake and love. And as somebody who's been 35 now for a few months,

1:38.5

it's a fine age. Oh, it's the ringing endorsement. What about you? How are you? Apart from being 35 and fine.

1:47.3

I'm 35 and fine. I've actually had the opposite experience of you because I've been basically

1:52.2

living as a hermit for the last 10 days because I'm flying to the US tomorrow. And I am trying
