Summary

Our guest this month is the novelist Rachel Kushner, who we have been huge fans of ever since we read her novel The Flamethrowers. Rachel’s latest book is a collection of essays, The Hard Crowd. Though it covers a lot of ground, the collection returns often to the rebels and misfits and outsiders living on the edge of society - a theme in her fiction too. Inspired by Rachel's work, for this show we're talking about ‘hard crowds’ in literature, from the ultraviolent gang in Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange to musicians living on the edge in their memoirs. So, climb on the back of our hogs and take a ride with us for the next hour of Literary Friction… Recommendations on the theme, Hard Crowds: Octavia: Nicotine by Nell Zink https://harpercollins.co.uk/products/nicotine?variant=32557710442574 Carrie: Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson https://us.macmillan.com/author/denisjohnson/ General recommendations: Octavia: No One Is Talking About This by Patricia Lockwood https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/no-one-is-talking-about-this-9781526629760/ Rachel: The Copenhagen Trilogy by Tove Ditlevsen https://www.penguin.co.uk/authors/138738/tove-ditlevsen.html Carrie: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John Le Carre https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/306/306246/tinker-tailor-soldier-spy/9780241330890.html Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/litfriction Email us: litfriction@gmail.com Tweet us & find us on Instagram: @litfriction Find lists of our recommendations at: http://uk.bookshop.org/shop/litfriction, where you can also order books while supporting independent bookshops This episode is sponsored by Picador: https://www.panmacmillan.com/picador

I'm Carrie Plitt here, as always, with my co-host, Octavia Bright.

0:16.9

Hi, Octavia. How are you?

0:18.7

Hi, Carrie. I'm really well. I actually, I'm very relieved because I got a terrible bout of hiccups just before we stand at this recording session. But I got rid of them. I think they were stress related. I'm on a bunch of deadlines at the moment and it's quite intense. And I also actually stress ate a mini magnum this afternoon.

0:38.0

And let me tell you, that was an excellent decision.

0:40.9

But I'm now wondering if it gave me hiccups.

0:43.5

And then the other thing that happened was my solicitor emailed me, addressing me as

0:47.0

Ho, Octavia.

0:51.0

And I laughed so hard.

0:52.2

I almost fell off my chair because I'm just so relieved it's not just me

who makes these like terrible typos. That's amazing. I know. He's also an incredibly serious

1:02.4

and fastidious man. So just the idea of him, dear Malcolm, how about you? How are you doing?

1:08.3

Does ice cream give you hiccups, by the way? I don't know, but it's the only connection I could make. It happened quite directly after the

1:16.2

Magnum. Interesting. I am fine. I mentioned on Armani said last time that I had plans to go into London,

1:23.1

and I did go into London, and it was glorious, and it didn't actually rain the entire time I was there,

1:29.9

which was very lucky considering the forecast. But I also like completely overdid it.

1:35.5

I tried to see way too many people. I got really hung over and then I spent like three days

1:40.8

recovering from it and also panicking that I'd given everyone COVID, I'd somehow

1:45.1

like picked it up on the train in and given everyone COVID and took like three rapid tests,

1:50.6

like three days in a row. So swings and roundabouts here, but I'm good. Still worth it.

1:57.3

Yeah, still totally worth it. But much more importantly than updates on my social life, I'm very excited to say that
