Summary

How do the people and things we desire shape our identities? And how do you render the physical intensity of desire on the page? Author K Patrick joins us in thinking about desire this month - we spoke to K about their debut novel Mrs. S, which tells the story of a young Australian who arrives at an elite English all-girls boarding school for a job and ends up having a life-changing affair with the headmaster's wife. It's a sensual portrait of queer desire, and the transformative power of lust and longing, which is why we wanted to revisit the theme of desire in this show. So, listen in for all the usual recommendations, our favourite writing about desire, and why desire is crucial to the act of reading itself. Recommendations on the theme, Desire: Octavia: A Lover's Discourse by Roland Barthes Carrie: Simple Passion by Annie Ernaux General Recommendations: Octavia: Intimacies by Katie Kitamura K: Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson Carrie: The Bee Sting by Paul Murray Find a list of all recommended books at: https://uk.bookshop.org/lists/november-2023-desire-with-k-patrick Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/litfriction Email us: litfriction@gmail.com Tweet us & find us on Instagram: @litfriction

Hi, Octavia. How are you?

Hi, Carrie. I am soggy because I got rained on earlier.

The weather. There it is.

0:33.6

I can't have it. It's really like happening. This kind of slide towards winter is happening. I got my

heavy boots out for the first time today and I wore a big scarf, which always makes me think of,

0:44.6

have you seen the extraordinary photograph of Lenny Kravitz? He's wearing this scarf that apparently

0:49.4

sent the internet into mayhem. I sent that to somebody the other day. Yeah. It's amazing.

0:53.5

It's like the perfect

0:54.6

seasonal image. It's Lenny in a really sexy, all brown outfit with the most enormous brown

1:01.1

scarf you've ever seen in your life. And the question is, is it a scarf, Lenny, or is it a blanket?

1:06.3

And it's a question I ask myself often when I wrap myself in this very large scarf that I have,

1:11.0

which I think really is genuinely more of a blanket.

1:13.4

One of the best presents I've ever been given is a large blanket scarf that was cashmere.

1:21.2

Oh, it's dark.

1:22.6

And it's just, it was like heaven.

1:24.7

Pierfills carry blue.

1:25.7

Yeah, and then I lost it somewhere as I do with all of my clothing. I know it's horrible, but it was great well it lasted. My heart. Wow. How are you? Still mourning that scarf, I hope. Yes, yeah, just in mourning, always. It's a busy time of year in the publishing calendar.

1:44.4

I think I said this last time, but we're getting to the end of it.

1:47.1

I'm about to go to the Frankfurt Book Fair, which...

1:49.8

Hot ticket.

1:50.5

Yeah, it's very hot ticket in a very weird city where we sit at tables and pitch books to each other, and it's not very glamorous.
