Summary

On last week’s podcast, Dan Allender responded to a listener question about leaving and cleaving in dating relationships. This week’s question, one that will take two weeks to explore, will likely be familiar to many of us: “As I work deeper into my story, how can I honor my own heart, and my spouse, when he or she is not willing to engage his or her own story and suffering?” Before we can look at all of the implications that are packed in that one painful question, it is necessary to look at another question: “What does it mean to engage in story?”

This week, as Dan continues responding to listeners' questions, he explores a concern that'll be familiar to many of us, the issue being,

0:16.4

as I work deeper into my story, how can I honor my own heart and my spouse when he or she is not willing to engage his or her own story and suffering?

This is my first podcast after an ordeal called sinus surgery.

0:35.6

I had sinus surgery in early January and took a little longer than I

0:42.9

would have preferred to find myself back to normalcy, whatever that means. The surgery itself

0:51.4

actually was simple and virtually painless.

What I found deeply difficult was the effect of what could be called opioid-induced constipation

1:07.0

and the intersection of a antibiotic that just wrecked havoc in my intestines. So any other

1:17.0

words will be a bit distasteful for most listeners. So I'll just say that I discovered I have

1:23.9

a large and small intestines. And when they're not working, life can be very unpleasant.

1:31.0

So I spent several days in various positions on the floor trying to find space within my abdomen to somehow squeeze out what was causing the bloating, all to say,

1:47.8

it is lovely. Oh my goodness, so lovely to feel well enough to do a podcast. But I must also admit

1:56.4

that it took probably the last half hour to stop sneezing. So I will say that there is probably some

2:04.3

effect of opioids, gas bloating, pain, exhaustion at play, at play, and some of what I want to talk about

2:17.4

this afternoon. The question that has been asked,

2:22.6

and I'm referring back to a listener's question, this person wrote, as I work deeper into my story,

2:31.7

how can I honor my own heart and my spouse when he or she is not willing to engage his or her own

2:39.9

story and suffering? Oh, what a painful question. Let me make a couple assumptions. If you listen to this

2:49.5

podcast, you have at least some commitment to the

2:54.8

engagement of story, and particularly your own. So I'm not going to engage all the issues of what it

3:05.1

means to engage a story or why it's important to do so. But I do want to ask,
