In this short episode, I am answering a listener's question about CMV, which is cytomegalovirus. This is a question from Lauren that was sent to me

say CMV throughout the rest of the episode instead of cytomegalovirus because that's pretty long.

So you're going to learn what is CMV, how it's transmitted, how it can impact pregnancy, how it's

diagnosed, and then how it can be prevented or treated. So CMV is a common virus that can

potentially have significant implications during pregnancy. It belongs to the herpes virus family.

That's actually a huge family of viruses and it's pretty widespread. Many people are infected with CMV at some point in their

lives most often without knowing it because it typically causes either mild symptoms or no

symptoms at all in people who are healthy. So how is CMV transmitted? Well, it is transmitted

through close contact with bodily fluids from an infected

person. So you can get it from contact with saliva. It can be spread through kissing,

especially when in contact with the saliva of young children who are common carriers of
